I share an office with a very keen cyclist, who more than anyone else that I know is very passionate about the sport. I have a brother and a few friends who cycle as well but no one more committed than him. Just about every day of this entire week I had to hear about Lance who happens to be in our city at the moment. Things I am forced to listen to are…. "Lance says this on Twitter", "Lance is here or there at the moment", "Lance just farted"….I can go on forever about all the Lance updates I get. I don't even want to start on when the Tour de France comes around, me who is not interested in cycling all that much has to lend a kind ear to listen to what's happening and who's ahead etc etc. Aside from cycling and the races I have been influenced by my colleague to eat better, count calories and take supplements (vitamins, minerals and herbs…oh and fibre) and to take care of my body. "J" as he will be referred to, is to me a mad, zealous but not to the point of being obsessive cyclist and an inspiring health junkie and I admire his dedication. Here's my mini interview with him.- What sport interests you the most?
Cycling, running and cricket.
- Which sport do you participate in? And how did you get into it?
Cycling and running.
J said that it stems from childhood. Little boys always run around, and ride around on their bikes so that is where the love of the sport comes from. He also says during his 2 year stay in the UK he rode along the riverside on his mountain bike which brought about a need to go further and faster. He eventually put road slick tires on his mountain bike and then finally advanced to a racer.
- Which races do you part-take in?
The Cape Argus Cycle Tour and many fun-rides conducted by the Pedal Power Association.
- Have you ever played sports at school? If so, what sport or sports?
Surprisingly J didn't play any sports at school.
- Does sports influence you to live a better life
J's response was "most definitely".
- Do you think sports can keep you away from gangs and drugs?
I agree with J's response which was "Yes, to an extent but it depends on how serious you take it. It requires commitment."
- Who is your sports hero?
This was a rhetorical question as I knew the answer before even asking the question. Lance Armstrong of course.
- Do you want to be on a sports team? Which one?
J says: Lance's team…Team Radioshack.
- How do you feel about working in a team, in sports?
J's says team work, especially in cycling is a good thing. Cycling in a team improves efficiency as each one gets a turn to lead the pack which results in the each cyclist lasting longer.
- Do you set yourself goals?
J says: In cycling, yes.
- How do you feel when you don't reach these goals?
J says: A little disappointed but motivated to do better.
- If you were a salad, which one would you be?
J says: A lettuce because it's so versatile.
- If you could have lunch with any sportsperson (dead or alive), who would it be?
Once again, I knew the answer to this one. MR. ARMSTRONG!
- Would you take any performance enhancing drugs?
Maybe he says. J would mostly take permissible supplements and that he would rather stick to the rules of the sport. Although, he is not anti performance-enhancing drugs, he says anything besides water does boost you so whether it's legal or illegal you are still enhancing yourself somehow.
- Until what age will you be cycling?
Opening a folder on his pc, he shows me that he actually thought about this one already and written it in a little autobiography that he is working on for a course project he is busy with. In his own words his answer to this question is "For as long as my body will allow me to do so safely".
THANK YOU J FOR ALLOWING ME TO INTERVIEW YOU NOW PLEASE STOP BOTHERING ME WITH ALL THIS LANCE AND CYCLING STUFF BUT PLEASE DON'T STOP ENCOURAGING ME AND OUR OTHER COLLEAGUES TO EAT BETTER AND EXERCISE MORE TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY BODY! :)
Good Luck J and all participants for Sunday's Race....
