At the ripe old age of 31, I decided to get orthodontic braces on my lower jaw only.
Seeing braces on teenagers is very common, you won’t even look twice when seeing them, however seeing braces on a grown-up isn’t a very common sight. By the time you’re grownup, married, have kids etc straightening your teeth isn’t really high up on your to-do list.
For me however, it’s a case of I have the money to pay for it now, I have the time and I’m mentally ready to deal with everything that goes with having braces.
A lot of people have a couple of slightly crooked lower jaw teeth, an overbite or an underbite. Crooked teeth are usually due to hereditary factors (just like your eye or hair colour), bad oral care, losing your baby teeth too early, thumb-sucking, the use of a dummy/pacifier or undue pressure on the teeth and gums.
Whatever the reason for my crowded lower jaw, I took the leap and finally got some braces.
Now, I’m not going to lie, it takes some (a lot) of getting used to.
For the adults out there or young braces candidates I’d like to share my experience with you, so you know what to expect...
